Parking Lot Dress Code

With senior year comes an array of traditions. From senior sunrise, to crowding the floor at pep-rallies to sing the alma mater, over the past five years seniors have contributed to making traditions unique to Boyd. While McKinney High and McKinney North seniors are painting their way into a new year, Boyd underclassmen are filling up senior parking.

Seniors painting their own personal stamp on their reserved spots is a long lasting tradition at North and McKinney High.

“The tradition is so popular because it shows seniors are head of the school and deserve to get the best parking,” McKinney High senior, Jaelyn Johnson said. “The best part is, no matter how late I am, I still get to park in the front.”

McKinney High senior class president Chelsey Bailey, and student council president Mary Slater, got the first pick of spots. Other seniors camped out Saturday night, some arriving as early as 6 p.m. to wait in line to claim their desires parking spaces. In the first line, students told an assistant principal which spot they preferred according to a map. Then, they proceeded to a second line where they paid the fifty dollar fee, turned in a sketch of their plan, and signed an agreement to not paint anything inappropriate.

Watching friends from other schools plan and paint their spots has left many Boyd seniors wondering why this tradition is not district wide.

“It would be awesome to be able to express ourselves on pavement and show school spirit at the same time,” senior Brandy Couchot said. “Plus, it would be a memory that would last a lifetime.”

When Boyd’s doors first opened, students and staff created traditions of their own.

“The administration, teachers, and students at the time wanted Boyd to have its own culture and traditions that were not the same as the other two schools,” associate principal Dr. Peirson said. “They created Boyd’s own identity.”
