Helping Cinderella get to the ball

Bright colors and long dresses illuminate the Fairy Godmother shop.

With the stress of homecoming that last thing girls want to worry about when shopping for a dress is money.

For four years, the Fairy Godmother Shop, run by Family, Career and Community Leaders of America, has been assisting girls in finding the perfect dress for free.

“Any student who needs a formal dress, short or long, school or personal, any reason you need one, you wont get turned down,” FCCLA adviser Rhonda Martin said.

Donations for the shop come in many different ways. Some dresses are delivered new and others have been previously worn.

“Four years ago I was on channel 5 talking about the Fairy Godmother Shop and people just started sending dresses,” Martin said. “But now when people clean out their closets they bring me their old formal dresses.”

The shop has since grown from its first advertisement on channel 5. The racks full of dresses have helped many girls get their dream night.

“It helps girls who don’t have enough money to get a new [dress] or have a free one.” FCCLA president Drew Hunter said.

By not requiring the dresses to be returned, girls are able to alter the dresses to make them their own.

“Some are in better shape,” Hunter said. “People can take [dresses] home, cut and do whatever they want to it. They can keep it or not bring it back.”

The Fairy Godmother Shop gives girls an opportunity to go to events they may not otherwise get to go.

“People [are] missing out because there are a lot of great things that are available and some people tend to just look at the more pricey and more pretty things,” senior Melanie Almanza said. “They spend more instead of taking the time out to go look at the things that may have been used but still are just as pretty as the next.”

The Fairy Godmother Shop doesn’t only help girls. Recently, Martin began collecting dance attire for boys as well.

“One day an old lady and man drove up and handed me ten one hundred dollar bills and told me to get some stuff for boys,” she said. “So I got two tuxes.”

The shop will be open for homecoming on Oct. 21. To visit the shop, find an FCCLA member or go to room Martin’s room, F113. All donations are welcome.

“It gives girls an opportunity to do something nice without  having to buy a dress for something then they can feel pretty for a night,” Hunter said.
