10 days, 10 styles

-
Recently, I realized (with a few hints from the other Spur staffers) that I wear my hair the same way every day: natural. I don’t know if it’s that I have to wake up at 4:30 am or if I’m just lazy, but when it comes to getting out the door my hair is the last thing that I worry about. To get rid of my monotonous hair habits, I decided to challenge myself to wear a different unique hairstyle every day for ten days.
.
Day One: The perky side braid:
For my first day of my hair challenge I decided to go with something simple because I’m not used to taking the time to do my hair in the morning. After hours on Google, Lauren Conrad’s beauty blog, “The Beauty Department” and social photo-sharing site, Pinterest I finally found an easy hairstyle that I liked: the perky side braid. Although a little quirky, it suited me and the style I was going for. The braid itself is super easy to do. Just braid back and away from the head until you run out of hair to braid, then, secure it with a small, clear rubber band.
.
Day Two: Skeeter hair- After seeing (and reading) The Help this summer, I have a had a bit of an obsession with Skeeter Phelan (played by Emma Stone). She is a feisty, misfit journalist with kinky ginger hair who isn’t afraid to voice her opinion. So I decided to kink up my hair as a tribute to one of my favorite book characters and my kindred spirit To achieve Skeeter’s perfectly crazy curls, I wet my hair and braided it in two very tight french braids. When I took out the braids the next day my hair was basically an afro. Without brushing it (it will get really frizzy if you do) I pushed my bangs and hair back into a rosette headband and completed the look with a cardigan and a denim skirt. Skeeter would be proud.

Day Three: The center part:
I decided to go out of my comfort zone and do a style that I have always wanted to try, the center part. I don’t know if it is the bad center part that I had during my awkward elementary school phase or if it is my OCD of having my part perfectly straight, but either way, I can never bring myself to wear a middle part in public. Yet every time I look at fashion week photos of models with perfectly parted hair, I still want to try it. After gathering my courage, I parted my hair down the center and let it air dry for a beach blown boho look. Quick, simple, stylish and it all worked out in the end!

Day Four: Easy braided ponytail:
After sleeping through my alarm, I decided I needed something easy, so I quickly braided my bangs back and threw my hair in a ponytail. Perfect for a comfy and carefree Friday.

Day 5: Braided hair tie:
I woke up in a groggy Monday-morning daze, so I chose a simple but creative way to jazz up my ponytail. I took a small strand of hair and braided it, then I wrapped the braid around my hair tie. For the five minutes I spent on my hair, it looked pretty fancy and unique.

Day Six: Pig Tails:
Although pig tails seem like a babyish hairstyle, I’ve seen a few celebrities and models pull of the Elementary school style in a fashionable way. I decided to give the hairstyle a try. I pulled my hair into two low, loose pig tails and added black ribbon. I ended up getting a lot of compliments, so I guess pig tails were a success.

Day Seven: The Milkmaid Braid:
When I saw models wearing milkmaid braids down the runway, I was a little bit shocked. Sure this classic European hairstyle is a lovely and unique up-do, but honestly, I thought it would never come back in style. So, I decided that it would be fun to resurrect my kindergarten favorite, but with a more high fashion twist. I split my hair in half and braided each side, then I pulled one braid across the top of my head and secured it with bobby pins. Next, I pulled the other braid across the opposite side and secured it. I got countless compliments and it was an easy fix that looked a lot fancier that it really was.

Day Eight: Rapunzel, Rapunzel:
Whether it is a french braid or a fishtail, braids are always my fallback hairstyle because they are cute and easy. Inspired by my favorite Disney movie, Tangled, I decided to re-vamp the classic braid with a whimsical twist. First, I split my hair into three sections like I was going to braid it, but instead I took the two outer sections of hair and braided them and temporarily secured them with hair ties. Next, I braided the three strands together like a normal braid. When I got down to the bottom, I took the hair ties out and secured the braid with a clear hair tie.

Day Nine: Over sized Bow:
Recently, I’ve noticed that large bows or bandannas tied in the hair are becoming a popular way to dress up an outfit, so I put my Pinterest addiction to use and found an Urban Outfitters look to imitate. I wore an over sized bow in natural hair so it would look effortless yet edgy with an over sized knit top and high-rise skinny jeans.

Day Ten: Triple Bun:
For my last style of my hair challenge, I decided to try another Pinterest hairstyle that I have been wanting to do for a while, the triple bun. What seemed to be an impossible hairstyle actually turned out to be very simple. I put my hair half-up, half-down, securing it with a clear hair tie, and twisted it into a tiny bun. I secured it with bobby pins then repeated the process three times. This was one of my favorite hairstyles that I did during the hair challenge. I will definitely do it again along with several of the others I attempted during my challenge. Overall, the 10 day hair challenge was a success and I discovered several stylish, yet easy alternatives to my natural hair.
