Upon its inception at the beginning of this school year, the Book Club began its weekly Tuesday meetings after school in the library. President Myrna Lara created the club to recommend books to other students and facilitate discussion of different genres while sharing a new perspective on reading.“Our founder, junior Myrna Lara, came to our library staff inquiring about beginning Book Club,” sponsor Shelia Frink said. “She is an avid reader and I have gotten to know [her] quite well over the past [three] years. Without hesitation, I agreed to support Myrna.”After the approval from the administrators, Lara put up posters to advertise the club.
“I see a lot of people who don’t know what to read looking at the books, not knowing which one to pick,” Lara said. “So I thought a book club would help them choose and get more into reading.”
The Book Club brings students together to discuss and gather information about books.
“[The club] is an extra curricular activity and its a fun place to be,” sophomore Austin Morrison said. “I read once a day and try to bring books that I think they will be interested in like my favorites horror and science fiction.”
Students who attend the meetings on Tuesdays gather genres of horror, suspense, sci-fiction, romance and mystery novels that are placed on a list next to the checkout line in the library for peers to refer to if they are looking for a book to read.
“The privilege and honor of serving as the sponsor for this incredible group [is] to support the opportunities a Book Club could provide our students here at Boyd,” Frink said.
During club meetings Lara lets everyone recommend books they have enjoyed reading and she adds the books to the list in the library for students to refer in finding a good book to read.
“I just hope to make the club bigger and I hope to make a lot of people start reading,” Lara said. “It’s going to be hard, but getting people involved will spread what reading is about.”
While Lara is leading this growing club, their sponsor is supporting all their conversations and helping them with any questions they need answered when sharing their books and opinions.
“Serving as the Library Media Specialist has given me the opportunity to develop ans instill the love of reading,” Frink said. “A book club is a wonderful avenue.”
All grade levels are welcomed to join to club at any point of time to contribute books to be recommended to others to read.
“Through joining, students would be connected with other students who share a common interest or hobby,” Frink said. “Books open the world to anyone. They inform, entertain, explain, console, inspire and influence young minds.”
This club is a different kind of book club because not everyone is reada the same book at the same time. Instead, each individual dedicates books they think others will enjoy reading as much as they did.
“[But] it’s not just about books,” Morrison said. “It’s about having fun and coming together.”
