About Us

The Spur is the student publication of McKinney Boyd High School, located in McKinney, Texas. McKinney Boyd is the third McKinney high school and opened in 2006. The Spur news magazine was created in 2008, the same year of Boyd’s first graduating class. Our publication’s goal is to inform the student body and tell the stories of the Bronco community and the world.

In 2013, adviser Javonna Bass and editor-in-chief Tiffany Nguyen relaunched boydspur.com after the previous staff graduated. However, Bass left early 2014 and adviser Alex Copeland, son of current yearbook adviser Julia Copeland, took her place. The site ran weekly news updates, sports photo slideshows and movie reviews since. That school year had one print edition with the new branding.

Then the 2014-2015 school year came around and under editor-in-chief Izzie Ramirez, The Spur had its first back-to-school edition and three other editions released. The Spur won honorable mention in newspapers and boydspur.com won third place in online news sites at the Texas Association of Journalism Educators’ Fall Fiesta Journalism Convention. The staff had also won numerous events in district, region and state UIL competitions that school year.

Now we publish six editions a year, update the site daily and run an Instagram, Twitter and Snapchat (@boydspur). Our online and print publications are all student run and made with assistance from our adviser Alex Copeland.
